Western pressure is key to Russia’s war ability to sustain war— Zelensky

(MENAFN) Ukraine’s president has said that Moscow’s capacity to continue its war effort depends far more on pressure from Western allies than on statements made by Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing that strong and enforced sanctions could sharply limit Russia’s ability to fight.

Speaking to journalists before traveling to Brussels, Volodymyr Zelenskyy played down recent remarks by Putin about retaining control over occupied Ukrainian territory, portraying them as repetitive messaging rather than evidence of real strength or momentum.

“The signals that Putin is giving are absolutely nothing new to us. I have always said that he does not want to end the war. The question is, can he continue it? This question already depends on our partners, on their pressure – sanctions first of all, and diplomatic pressure,” he said.

Zelenskyy added that he doubts Russia’s economy could sustain the war at its previous intensity if sanctions are properly applied and maintained, according to his remarks.

He also said that the United States is communicating its willingness to pursue an end to the conflict through both public statements and private diplomatic channels, noting that Kyiv supports these efforts despite unresolved and complex issues.

“We do not agree with all the features of certain future agreements. You know about this. We have questions; there are some disagreements regarding the territorial issue, financing, frozen assets, and some other issues that are not agreed upon,” he said.

The Ukrainian leader warned that if Putin slows what he described as one of the most active diplomatic phases seen so far, Washington would need to intensify pressure on Moscow.

His comments followed remarks made a day earlier by Putin, who said Russia prefers a negotiated outcome but would continue military action if Ukraine and its partners refuse to “talk about the substance.”

Putin has also stated that fighting would only stop if Ukrainian forces withdraw from parts of the Donbas region that remain under Kyiv’s control.
