Trump says Moscow, Kiev are close to reach deal to end war

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday at the World Economic Forum in Davos that Moscow and Kiev are nearing an agreement to end the conflict in Ukraine. He also announced plans to meet Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky on Thursday, coinciding with a visit by a US negotiation team to Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The White House launched mediation efforts after Trump returned to office last year, and US officials have conducted multiple rounds of discussions with both Russian and Ukrainian representatives. While a final breakthrough has yet to be achieved, the parties have described the talks as “constructive” and acknowledged some progress.

“I think I can say that we're reasonably close,” Trump said when asked about the peace process. “I believe they [Russia and Ukraine] are at a point now where they can come together and get a deal done.”

The president did not provide details on the potential agreement but noted that reaching a deal requires maintaining a “difficult balance.” He explained that at times one side was ready to finalize terms while the other found the conditions unacceptable, and vice versa.

US-mediated efforts intensified late last year. Trump’s original peace plan, leaked in November, proposed that Kiev cede territory to Moscow and renounce its NATO membership aspirations, among other measures.

In December, Ukraine and its European allies presented a counter-proposal, which altered the original US draft substantially and was deemed a non-starter by Russia. Moscow maintained it remained “fully ready” to resolve the conflict provided its key security concerns were addressed.

On Tuesday, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff met with Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev, a session both sides described as constructive.
