Kremlin Clarifies Composition of Russian Delegation for Geneva
Vladimir Medinsky, Moscow’s chief negotiator on the Ukraine conflict, will lead the delegation due to the expanded scope of discussions, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Monday.
Medinsky had not participated in the previous two Russia-US-Ukraine rounds in Abu Dhabi, where Admiral Igor Kostyukov, head of Russian military intelligence, led the delegation.
Peskov explained that Medinsky’s absence was due to the prior meetings’ focus on military logistics, such as prisoner exchanges. "The discussion centered on security issues, issues that directly affected the military. That is why Kostyukov led our group there," he said.
For the Geneva session scheduled for February 17-18, the agenda will cover a wider range of issues, including territorial matters and broader demands, making Medinsky’s presence essential. Peskov emphasized that Medinsky “remains” the official head of the Russian negotiating team.
The delegation will also include Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin and President Vladimir Putin’s envoy Kirill Dmitriev, who leads Russia’s sovereign wealth fund. Peskov noted that Dmitriev will continue to work on a separate economic cooperation track, which is expected to meet in Geneva alongside the main negotiations.
