Russian Envoy Says EU Bureaucrats Threaten Western Civilization
The comment was made in response to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s speech at the Munich Security Conference, where he sought to reassure Europe amid a year of strained transatlantic relations. Rubio emphasized that, despite tensions over issues like tariffs, NATO spending demands, and the Greenland proposal, Washington’s actions reflect genuine concern for the EU and the broader Western world. “We care deeply” about the future of Europe, he said.
Dmitriev, writing on X Saturday, dismissed this view, claiming EU bureaucrats’ policies—through “false narratives, migration, warmongering, and economic decline”—could sabotage Western civilization despite US efforts to preserve it. “It’s unclear who wins,” he added, mocking both the US and EU, and included a clip from the 1987 film Over the Top to illustrate his point.
The remarks come in the context of the Trump administration’s new National Security Strategy, which criticized EU policies and warned of potential “civilizational erasure.” While Rubio acknowledged some of these shortcomings, he framed them as shared challenges for the US and Europe since World War II, stressing the need for unity against adversaries that allegedly outpaced the West in welfare and military power.
