Macron Urges EU to Advance New Sanctions Against Russia

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday called on the European Union to advance its 20th sanctions package against Russia, saying discussions on new punitive measures would occur “in the coming days.”

Macron made the statement while hosting Finnish President Alexander Stubb at the Elysee Palace, where talks focused on Ukraine, Arctic security, and European defense.

“Next, we will continue to increase pressure on Russia. We must move forward on the 20th package of European Union sanctions, and discussions will take place in the coming days,” Macron said.

He also urged the EU to pursue “a total ban on maritime services for Russian oil exports” and to strengthen coordinated measures against Moscow’s “shadow fleet,” while emphasizing Europe’s commitment to sustaining financial and military support for Kyiv.

Macron expressed confidence that pledges made at the latest European Council, including a €90 billion ($106 billion) support package for Ukraine, would be fulfilled.

Stubb supported Macron’s call for continued pressure on Russia, describing the conflict as long and counterproductive to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s objectives.

“In my opinion, Putin is not winning this war, but he cannot make peace. That is the dilemma he is facing now,” Stubb said, calling it a “strategic failure.”
